The contracting party conducting the due diligence requested the basis for a material claim from the company's report. Everyone in the company knew that the claim was reasonable. The finance team knew where the data came from. The person in charge of sustainability remembered the methodology. The director remembered approving the claim. But that knowledge was in the people, not in the system. It took eleven days to reconstruct the response. The difference is not visible in normal operations. They do not assemble cybersecurity from scratch after an incident. Those capabilities are infrastructure. They run continuously, in the background, as part of how the organisation operates. Evidence is rarely treated that way. People must remember what happened. Records must be found, matched and dated. Versions must be reconciled. An independent party has no way to tell it apart from a convenient narrative unless something contemporaneous supports it. It is generated at the point where information or a decision is created, not afterwards. Ownership is clear: someone is accountable for every material data point and statement. Verification is built into the process, not added at the end. Assurance engagements are expanding. Buyers are asking suppliers for evidence. Investors and counterparties are examining governance during due diligence. Regulators are looking more closely at public claims. When they become routine, reconstruction becomes a standing cost. It does not discover gaps while being asked about them. That difference rarely appears in a headline.
